A 20-year-old college sophomore is in critical condition after an alleged alcohol-involved fraternity hazing incident on Thursday at Bowling Green State University in northwestern Ohio, WTOL reports.
Stone Foltz is reportedly on life support, an attorney speaking on behalf of his family told the station, while they work out details of donating his organs after his death.
Sean Alto with Cooper Elliott law firm said that Foltz was dropped off at his apartment at around 11 or 11:30 p.m. Thursday night after the off-campus Pi Kappa Alpha event and “shortly thereafter” found by friends who called 911.
“He was in need of immediate transport to the hospital,” Alto said. “And he was [flown] to the hospital where he’s at now.”
After the national Pi Kappa Alpha organization erroneously said Saturday Foltz had died, the student’s mother asked in a statement posted to social media that everyone “please have respect, be considerate and passionate.”
“Please don’t post comments on details of what you heard,” she wrote. “Stone is still with us for the time as we go thru the process to donate his organs. Hug your children and tell them everyday how much you love them.”
The national chapter said that it had put the Bowling Green chapter on administrative suspension and told its leaders to cooperate with the investigation. It also warned that if the investigation warrants, it will permanently suspend the chapter and expel members who may have participated in illegal activity.
The university also put the fraternity chapter on an “interim suspension” during the investigation.
Officials have not released details of what took place, but the roommate of a potential pledge provided WTOL with second-hand information about what happened at the off-campus party. He said his roommate told him they had to drink and handle of liquor — 1.75 ml — and that when his roommate came home, he’d never seen him “more drunk in his entire life.” “He immediately went to the bathroom and was throwing up in the toilet for just 15 minutes to an hour and making himself vomit,” he said.
Attorney Alto told NBC4i that the incident was alcohol related. “The nature of the hazing incident is still being investigated, but I can tell you that it involved a large quantity of alcohol consumed in a very short period of time during a fraternity pledge event,” he said.
The scant details sound eerily similar to the death of Adam Oakes, a potential pledge to the Delta Chi fraternity at Virginia Commonwealth University late last month. Oakes, 19, was also reportedly given a handle of whiskey to drink and passed out while still at the off-campus house where the party was held, as CrimeOnline reported. Oakes was found unresponsive the next morning and pronounced dead on the scene.
