A Maryland dad and his young daughter died over the weekend after drowning in a swimming pool.
The News & Observer reports that the incident happened at a teen’s birthday party in Waldorf on Saturday. The 7-year-old victim apparently didn’t know how to swim but jumped into the pool.
The child’s father, 44, sprung into the pool to save her but was “unable to swim,” responding officers wrote. A 17-year-old teen then tried to help the pair, but according to police, he “took on too much water.”
“All three victims were removed from the water and CPR was initiated by Fire/EMS and a police officer,” authorities said.
The father has been identified as Haffis Olanrewaju Agboola. The 7-year-old has been identified as Christian Omofolawe Agboola. The 17-year-old is in critical condition at the Children’s Hospital Center.
“Between trying to rescue them and struggling, everyone took in too much water,” Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Diane Richardson said, according to The Washington Post. “I just think everything was chaotic.”
Richardson said the water in the pool was around 8-feet or 9-feet deep.
The incident is currently under investigation. Check back for updates.
