A 10-year-old Texas girl with a gunshot wound to her arm clutched her baby brother close and played dead after a gunman killed three members of her family in Houston overnight, then she FaceTimed her grandmother to get help.
Family members rushed to the apartment and found 35-year-old Gregory Carhee, 29-year-old Donyavia Lagway, and their daughter, 6-year-old Harmony Carhee, dead from gunshot wounds, KHOU reported.
The 10-year-old, shot in the arm, was taken to a nearby hospital and was in stable condition. Her 1-year-old brother wasn’t hurt, and an 8-year-old brother was away from the apartment with his uncle. Her mother had just learned that she was pregnant with her fifth child.
Police said the suspect is a man in his 20s who wore a surgical mask when he knocked on the apartment door just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, KPRC reported. When Gregory Carhee opened the door, the man came in and took the infant from Carhee’s arms. The 10-year-old reportedly said the man lined everyone up on the couch and shot them each in the head. It wasn’t clear how the baby escaped the shooting or how the 10-year-old was only struck in the arm.
“She FaceTimed her grandmother … showed her everything,” family member Tamera Denton told KTRK. “Then her [grandmother] called 911.”
According to KPRC, detectives said they have collected surveillance video from the area and believe they know the identity of the gunman.
“Right now, we don’t have all the details and right now we’re just looking for a suspect to see what happened,” Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Patty Cantu said.
“This is a very, very tragic scene. We’re sending out prayers to the family,” she said. “This was a very difficult scene not only for us, the officers, but the family as well. So we’re sending out prayers and hopes that anybody has any information.”
