A 64-year-old Alabama man is hospitalized in serious condition with life-threatening injuries after he allegedly shot and killed his wife and mother and then turned the weapon on himself.
The incident took place early Saturday afternoon in the unincorporated community of Spiegner, about 18 miles north of Montgomery, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.
William Jeffries allegedly shot his wife, 62-year-old Susan Jeffries in one room of the house, Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said.
“He went to another room where his daughter was with her young children,” Franklin said. “He told his daughter ‘I just shot your momma, I’m about to shoot your grandmomma and then I’m going to shoot myself.”
Before his daughter could react, Jeffries “went into his mother’s room and shot Joyce Jeffries, who is 84,” Franklin continued. “He then shot himself in the head with the .380 cal handgun. All this occurred within about 30 feet inside the home.”
Franklin said his department is trying to determine a motive, describing the family as “good folks” and noting they’d bought the house where they lived just a year ago.
“In talking with the daughter, she said Mr. Jeffries has been very distraught because his mother was diagnosed with dementia,” the sheriff said. “That’s the only thing we have as a possible motive right now.”
