‘Innocent’ 12-Year-Old Killed in Drive-By Shooting: Police

A 12-year-old North Carolina child was shot and killed while sitting outside at a picnic table with friends Saturday evening.

Monroe police said they were called to scene at about 8 p.m. and found child with a gunshot wound. The child was taken to Atrium Union hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Police said they found multiple shell casings at the scene, although there were no other victims.

The children were not believed to be the targets of the shooting, which came from someone inside a black Ford Freestyle SUV, police said.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of the victim and we need the community to help identify and hold the shooter accountable for what they have done,” said Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard. “Someone knows who did this. This was an innocent child and we need people to be brave and step up so we can catch those responsible for this senseless act of violence”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Monroe Police Department at (704) 282-4700.
