A 22-year-old woman has been missing for possibly more than three weeks, and authorities are declining to share details about the circumstances of her disappearance.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, 22-year-old Gabrielle Petito of Suffolk County, Long Island, had been on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend when she fell out of contact with her family in late August. A parent reported her missing this past weekend, and authorities in multiple states are working to locate the missing woman.
The Suffolk County Police Department said in a press release that investigators have recovered the 2012 Ford Transit van with Florida license plates that Petito and her boyfriend were traveling in. A spokesperson for the SCPD declined to answer further questions or confirm a report in the Daily Mail alleging that Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie had returned to Florida with the vehicle and has not been cooperating with police.
It remains unclear where the vehicle was located.
According to Newsday, Petito last had a Facetime call with her mother on August 23 or 24, when she may have been in Wyoming. Her mother also received text messages from her daughter’s phone on August 30, but reportedly said she is not certain who typed and sent them.
Petito and the man believed to be her boyfriend had documented their road trip on Instagram. Petito’s last photo was posted on August 25. That photo was not geo-tagged but a photo posted on August 13 appears to have been taken in Utah. Laundrie also posted a photo taken in Moab, Utah, on his Instagram account on August 13, his last photo post.
Police have not said whether they suspect foul play or if Laundrie is a suspect.
A GoFundMe page for a fundraiser launched by a family friend describes the circumstances of Petito’s disappearance as “suspicious.”
Petito is described as a white female, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She reportedly has multiple tattoos, including one on her forearm that reads “let it be.”
