Authorities in South Carolina are still working to determine the cause of death of a young woman who died mysteriously while traveling to visit her father outside Myrtle Beach.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, 21-year-old Sheridan Wahl was found dead in Pamplico, South Carolina, on September 21, the day after her mother reported her missing. The circumstances of Wahl’s death remain a mystery even after a preliminary autopsy.
Wahl had reportedly been traveling through the Myrtle Beach area on a road trip to visit her father. On September 19, she reportedly tried to rent a scooter in Myrtle Beach but was refused because she was not wearing shoes at the time. The same day, she told her mother she was considering returning home but her mother reportedly told her to stay put and avoid the long drive home to Tampa, Florida, at night.
It remains unclear from local reports exactly where Wahl was intending to meet her father and if she ever saw him during the trip.
A Florence County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained by WBTW showed that Wahl’s car was found abandoned and burned in a cornfield on September 19. It it not yet clear what time of the day the car was found there, and if Wahl was still with her vehicle when she spoke to her mother on September 19.
Two days later, Wahl was found dead behind the Hannah-Salem Fire Department building on Highway 378 in Pamplico, about 10 miles from where her car was found and about 55 miles from Myrtle Beach.
It remains unclear if there was any sign of trauma to the young woman’s body. According to WBTW, the results of an autopsy conducted on Friday were initially inconclusive.
“The manner and cause of death in the Sheridan Wahl case is pending additional postmortem studies and investigation at this time,” Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken said in a statement obtained by the news station. The medical examiner’s office will conduct additional testing in an effort to determine how Wahl died.
Authorities have said very little about the ongoing death investigation. CrimeOnline will provide further updates when more information is available.
