On Tuesday, police reportedly discovered a body amid their ongoing search of a Tennessee woman who vanished in June.
Knoxville police found the unidentified body while looking for Desheena Kyle, 26, who was reported missing from her apartment on June 28. While WVLT reported that officials said Kyle was last heard from on June 23, June 18 is also believed to have been her last verified sighting.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, two witnesses told police they spotted a man at Kyle’s apartment complex on June 18 — the same day a manager took a picture of a broken window at Kyle’s unit. Kyle reported the broken window to the building’s management and told them an angry ex-boyfriend had done it.
The two witnesses also told authorities that they heard yelling and glass breaking on June 18. One of the witnesses said they saw the man put his hands around Kyle’s neck, the News Sentinel reported.
On Thursday, Knoxville police said they have deemed Kyle’s ex-boyfriend, John Bassett, 29, a person of interest in Kyle’s disappearance. They also announced that they are investigating the case as a homicide.
Bassett was arrested in July on an unrelated charge which put him in violation of his probation. In 2014, Bassett was charged with domestic assault against Kyle, according to reports.
Bassett has not been charged in connection with Kyle’s disappearance.
The body found on Tuesday was sent to the Regional Forensic Center for an autopsy and identification. Knoxville police said Kyle’s family has been notified of the latest development.
