On Wednesday, a California judge suspended Britney Spears’ father as the conservator of her estate.
CNN reported that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny appointed certified public accountant John Zabel as the temporary conservator. Britney Spears and her attorney selected Zabel as the replacement.
Jamie Spears’ has been his daughter’s conservator since 2008. Earlier this month, he filed a petition to terminate the conservatorship.
“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance,” the filing said.
Britney Spears initially credited the arrangement with saving her career, but she started publicly challenging the arrangement last year. Since then, the 39-year-old singer has called the ongoing conservatorship “abusive,” revealing in court documents that she wants to marry her boyfriend and have children, but the court-mandated arrangement has prevented her from getting a doctor’s appointment to get an IUD removed.
CNN reported that another court date will be scheduled — possibly before the end of the year — regarding the complete termination of Britney Spears’ conservatorship.
