An 8-year-old girl died Saturday when she was shot in the head in southwest Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood.
Chicago police said the girl and an adult who was caring for her were out walking Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune said. They heard gunshots and ran into a bank, then noticed the girl had been struck in the head by a bullet.
The girl was rushed to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A 26-year-old man was also shot as he walked out of a nearby store. He was in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, Chicago Police spokesperson Michelle Tannehill said, with a gunshot wound in the lower back.
Tannehill said investigators found 13 shell casings in the neighborhood, and the back window of a parked SUV was shot out.
She said the girl and her caretaker, who was not injured, were not the intended targets of the shooting. She did not say if the man who was shot was targeted.
