Florida officials have canceled a Blue Alert for a registered sex offender who allegedly fled after shooting a deputy multiple times on Tuesday.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said on Wednesday that Gregory Miedema, 33, is “no longer at large“. WTXL reported that Miedema shot a Taylor County Sheriff’s deputy on US 19 and Deer Run Road, which is south of Salem.
While the FDLE did not disclose details surrounding the canceled Blue Alert, Gilchrist County police revealed that Miedema was killed in Dixie County after breaking into a home and exchanging gunfire with the homeowner.
Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office released the statement below on Facebook:
The suspect involved in the Tuesday night shooting of a Taylor County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) deputy has reportedly been shot and killed after breaking into a Dixie County residence and exchanging gunfire with a homeowner, according to multiple reports.
Gregory Ryan Miedema, 33, was the subject of a statewide manhunt and a “Florida Blue Alert” issued late Tuesday night after allegedly wounding a TCSO deputy during a traffic stop.
Perry Newspapers has a reporter on scene just over the Taylor County-Dixie County line at a residence where Miedema was reportedly shot and killed after breaking into a home in Dixie County and trading gunshots with a homeowner, who reportedly suffered a wound to his shoulder.
TCSO Deputy Troy Anderson was shot three times during a traffic stop on U.S. Hwy. 19 South approximately six miles south of Salem and just north of Tennille around 10 p.m. Tuesday night, Feb 22.
Anderson was flown by helicopter to a Gainesville area hospital, where he is currently being treated for gunshot wounds to his jaw, neck and hand, according to a family member.
A registered sex offender, Miedema was in the U.S. Army in 2011 when he was convicted of lewd or lascivious battery, intercourse with a victim 12 to 15 years old, and possession of child pornography. He was sentenced to 78 months in prison.
A Blue Alert was issued in light of Tuesday’s shooting. The deputy Miedema allegedly shot multiple times during a traffic stop was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. The officer’s current condition is not immediately known.
