A Bronx mother and her 6-year-old daughter were found stabbed to death late Saturday night, and hours later police found the man they believe was responsible dead from an apparent suicide.
Police conducted a wellness check just before midnight and found Gabrielle Muniz, 26, and her daughter, Rosara Estevez, with “stab wounds about their bodies.” Officers called in emergency medical services, who pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Investigators said they found multiple knives in the apartment.
More than 12 hours later, police responded to a call about a barricaded gunmen several blocks away. The found Caleb Duberry, 35, dead inside. Sources told WPIX that Duberry, the suspect in the deaths of Muniz and her daughter, killed himself.
According to The New York Post, Duberry was Muniz’s boyfriend and was on parole for assault. Sources told the Post that Duberry stabbed himself to death as police closed in on him.
“I’m disgusted at what happened because it not only took my sister but my niece,” Gabrielle’s sister, Gisselle Muniz, told The Post. “I’m sure she watched her mommy die before she was taken.”
Gisselle Muniz, who lives in Florida, said that Rozara was not Duberry’s daughter and that she didn’t like him. Her sister, she said, worked from home for a law firm and was studying pharmacy with the hope of someday becoming a doctor.
“She was doing so well. I never expected this to happen,” Gisselle said. “She did so much for her daughter. That was her main motivation.”
Sources told the post that the mother had stab wounds to the head, back, and arms, while the little girl suffered blunt force trauma to the head and multiple stab wounds to the face.
