Is romance novelist Nancy Brophy a grieving widow or a cold-blooded spouse killer?
Brophy, 68, is on trial in Multnomah County, Portland, for the death of her husband, chef Daniel Brophy, 63. She’s accused of shooting him in the back as he prepared for work on June 2, 2018. Brophy has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
According to Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Shawn Overstreet, Brophy killed her husband for his insurance money. Daniel had a $1.4 million insurance policy, Oregon Live reports. Overstreet said Brophy not only stood to gain the insurance money when her husband died but also a worker’s compensation plan and the equity in their home.
Traffic cameras placed Brophy’s vehicle near the culinary institute that Daniel taught at on the morning of the murder. He was later found shot in the back with his belongings still on him. There were no security cameras at the school.
The defense argued that Brophy had no reason to kill her husband and has suffered both financially and emotionally since his death.
“Nancy has always been thoroughly, madly, crazily in love with Dan Brophy, and she remains so to this day,” defense attorney Lisa Maxfield previously said.
