A Brooklyn mother who allegedly dropped her 6-month-old son from her second-floor balcony has been charged with attempted murder.
Police said that Breindy Meisels, 29, has also been charged with attempted manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child, and abandonment of a child in the early Thursday morning incident, The New York Daily News said.
Officers arriving at the apartment in the Mapleton area were greeted by the boy’s father, who told them he was sleeping when Meisels woke him up and said she’d dropped the baby from the balcony.
Police sources said the boy was found on the concrete below and rushed to Maimonides Medical Center. He had several broken ribs and other fractured bones, police said, as was still in ICU on Saturday.
Police said Meisels was arrested on Friday and taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.
Neighbors of the couple were shocked.
“We never heard her scream at the kids or yell at the kids,” Malky Ausch told the Daily News. “She wouln’t hurt a fly. She’s so soft and loving and tender.”
Other neighbors said the couple have an older child and wondered if Meisels could be suffering from post partum deparession.
“It’s a terrible thing,” another neighbor, who identified himself only as Berish, said. “I see her early almost every morning taking the kids to the school bus. The way she handled the kids, it was beautiful.”
The Daily News said the Meisels’ arraignment was pending on Saturday.
