A 31-year-old Pennsylvania woman was charged Tuesday with criminal homicide in the death of a 3-year-old boy.
Pennsylvania State Police said a 911 call alerted first responders to a child “choking on baby wipes” in Everett Borough a little after 9 p.m. Saturday.
The toddler, identified as Travis Young, was initially taken to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Bedford but was later airlifted to the university’s Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The boy died on Sunday.
An autopsy revealed “extensive bruising and injury” to the toddler’s body, and the death was ruled a homicide caused by “manual strangulation and asphyxiation.”
Chelsea Cooley was charged with criminal homicide, endangering the welfare of children, aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a victim less than 5 years old, strangulation, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.
Investigators did not describe the relationship between Cooley and the toddler.
Cooley was arraigned Tuesday night, according to WTAJ, and ordered held without bond. She has a preliminary hearing set for June 8.
