Prosecutors Investigate Death of Malnourished Toddler With Broken Bones: Reports

New Jersey prosecutors are looking into the “suspicious” death of a 3-year-old boy who had several broken bones when he was taken to a hospital.

Sources told WNBC that the Jersey City boy’s mother told a nurse at the hospital that her son had been struggling to breathe in recent days, and his condition worsened.

On Tuesday morning, the sources said, the boy began gasping for breath and the mother ran screaming into the street. An off-duty EMT was nearby and tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was taken to Christ Hospital just before 6:30 a.m. and pronounced dead three and a half hours later.

NJ.com, however, said police radio broadcasts indicated “no parents on the scene.”

The Hudson County prosecutor’s office said the medical examiner was conducting an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

But the sources told WNBC that the toddler appeared malnourished in addition to the broken bones.

Detectives are checking surveillance footage and talking with neighbors as they investigate.

No other details were released.
