A Highland Park family heading for breakfast was caught up in the middle of the mass shooting at the Chicago suburb’s July 4th parade, and pulling a blood-stained toddler from beneath his father.

Lauren Silva told the New York Times the boy, later identified as Aiden McCarthy, kept asking if his parents were OK while her boyfriend and son tried to help the dying man, the New York Times reported.

Irina and Kevin McCarthy, 35 and 37, did not survive the attack, two of seven slain victims along with dozens of wounded. But the boy with the blond curls survived. He wasn’t shot and was taken to the police station while detectives tried to find out who he was.

Adrienne Rosenblatt, 71, a neighbor of the McCarthys, saw one of the photos of the boy online and instantly recognized him. She contacted his grandparents, who brought him home from the police station.

Authorities identified Aiden’s parents on Tuesday. A GoFundMe established by a relative of Irina McCarthy has raised more than $1 million to help his family and caregivers with the boy’s future.

“At two years old,” Irina Colon wrote, “Aiden is left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents.

“Aiden will be cared for by his loving family and he will have a long road ahead to heal, find stability, and ultimately navigate life as an orphan. He is surrounded by a community of friends and extended family that will embrace him with love, and any means available to ensure he has everything he needs as he grows.”
