7-Year-Old Girl Shot Dead at Atlanta Family Gathering After Dispute Between Multiple Adults: Police

A family gathering in Atlanta turned deadly Saturday night when a domestic situation arose and a child was shot to death, 11 Alive reports.

Shortly before 10:15 p.m., a 7-year-old girl was shot at least once inside an apartment unit in the Camden Vantage Apartments, Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. told the television station.

The apartment, along Jackson Street, is in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood in the northeast part of the city. Hampton said there was some sort of domestic situation involving multiple adults and that the dispute devolved into gunfire.

First responders rushed the girl to a local hospital, but she had already died as a result of the gunshot wound, according to FOX 5.

“What we know thus far in this investigation is that it was a domestic incident that escalated. During that escalation we know that there was an exchange of gunfire,” Hampton said at a press conference, FOX 5 reports. “During this exchange of gunfire, that’s when our victim was hit.”

Police have not arrested any suspects in connection with the shooting. Some of the people attending the gathering reportedly left the scene following the gunfire, including a male. Investigators are working to understand what involvement, if any, he may have had in the shooting.

“Any death is tragic,” Hampton said during the press conference, according to 11 Alive. “But when there is a child involved, it really hits home.”

Authorities are asking that anyone with information about what happened to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
