Three young children died from an “apparent drowning” after their unconscious bodies were discovered on a Coney Island beach early Monday morning.
According to Pix 11, the three children – a 7-year-old boy and two girls, a 4-year-old and a 3-month-old – were found unconscious on the New York beach a little after 4:30 a.m. First responders attempted to revive the children before rushing them to nearby Coney Island Hospital, where the children were pronounced dead.
Police said that prior to discovering the children, they found a 30-year-old woman, barefoot and “soaking wet”, on Brighton Beach’s Riegelmann Boardwalk. Police believe she is the children’s mother. When police found the woman she was with other members of her family, but not the children.
According to police, a concerned family member called 911 at 1:40 a.m. and said that her relative may have harmed her three small children, triggering a search for the family.
Police said the mother made statements to her family members that made them concerned for the children’s safety
After the 911 call, police went to the apartment of the family. Their knocks on the door went unanswered, but the father of one child was in the building and said he also feared for the children’s safety. The man directed officers to the boardwalk.
The woman believed to be the mother is now being questioned by police but has not been charged with a crime. Police continue to investigate the apparent triple drowning and are asking any witnesses to come forward with information. The tip line is 1-800-577-TIPS.
There were no previous allegations or reports of abuse or neglect towards the mother.
