Disturbing video from New York City shows a woman stealing the wallet of a man who had died after being run over by a tractor-trailer truck near Times Square, the New York Post reports.
Authorities have thus far been unable to identify the victim or notify his loved ones about his death because of the heartless theft. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, when the victim, a man who appeared to be in his 50s, was walking across Eighth Avenue at the intersection of West 44th Street.
After the man was run over, a woman wearing a black jacket with white pants slipped under the truck and stole his wallet.
Some people nearby even encouraged her, according to the video.
“Go ahead, gangsta! Go ahead!” one man can be heard saying in the footage.
Other witnesses called the police, but as of Sunday the woman still had not been identified or found.
Authorities have not yet charged the driver and it is unclear whether that will happen. The driver remained at the scene after the incident, Patch reports.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Patch.
People who watched the video told the Post they were appalled by what happened.
“Nobody came in to stop? That’s even more disturbing,” 83-year-old Elma Kanefield told the Post.
“To see somebody dead under a truck and actually do that — that’s horrible,” 51-year-old Marco Nieves told the newspaper.
“I am kinda disappointed. I didn’t think New York was the kind of place where that would happen,” 25-year-old Theo Cooper told the Post. “Sure, we’re used to being all grumpy and frustrated at each other, but we’re also supposed to stick up for each other and not like convince each other to do terrible things.”
