On Thursday, a Florida jury recommended life in prison for Nikolas Cruz, who killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.
According to WPLG, the 12 jurors heard testimony in Broward County from July 18 to October 5 about how Cruz, 24, carried out the mass shooting that killed 14 students and three members of staff. Meanwhile, defense attorneys attributed his murderous behavior to fetal alcohol syndrome.
In Florida, a defendant can only be sentenced to death if a jury unanimously concludes that various aggravating factors are present and that they supersede any mitigating factors. A defendant will receive life in prison if a single juror does not vote for death, The New York Times reported.
The 17 murder counts are separate, meaning Cruz could be sentenced to life for one slaying and death for another.
Cruz was present in court for Thursday’s hearing.
Jurors deliberated for about seven hours before reaching a decision. On all counts, jurors unanimously found that various aggravating factors existed. However, in each instance, one or more jurors concluded that mitigating factors outweighed aggravating factors presented by the state.
Their verdicts are as follows:
For the murder of Luke Hoyer—life in prison
For the murder of Martin Duque—life in prison
