Investigators in Halifax County, Virginia, found an infant dead in a yard early Tuesday evening.
The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said it had identified the teen mother of the dead child — and the circumstances of the death, WDBJ reported.
Detectives said they were waiting for a reported from the state Medical Examiner’s Office before charges are filed.
Sheriff Fred S. Clark said that deputies were called at about 6 p.m. and found the infant already ready.
Clark also said that Halifax County Social Services and a cadaver dog from Black Diamond Search and Rescue were involved in the investigation.
Police did not say how long the baby had been dead or speculate about how the child died. They have not yet said where the child was found in the yard.
