Video: Bar Patrons Tackle Bartender’s Attorney Ex-Boyfriend When He Tries to Kill Her

A Texas attorney was arrested — and promptly released on bond — after he was caught on video trying to kill his ex-girlfriend while she was at her job this weekend.

The video, shared by Austin city council member Mackenzie Kelly, shows 41-year-old Gavin Rush enter the pub where his ex-girlfriend works as a bartender, have a heated conversation, and then pull out a gun and fire.

Two bystanders — both sitting at the bar — spotted the weapon and moved to tackle Rush, making his shot miss his target. The bystanders wrestled the gun away, but not before Rush fired more shots and tried to kill himself, KTBC reported.

KTBC said the two men knew the backstory of their bartender and the attorney.

Austin police said that the relationship between Rush and the unnamed woman ended about six weeks earlier. Rush wanted to get back together, but the woman refused. Rush then sent texts threatening to harm her and her new partner.

The woman stopped answering his texts, telling him she was at work, investigators said.

That’s when Rush showed up at the pub where she worked, demanding to speak with her. She refused, he pulled out the gun, equipped with a laser sight that promptly appeared on the woman’s chest, KEYE reported

Police said Rush fired three shots, one striking a mirror directly behind where his ex was standing.

Kelly, whose district includes the pub, wrote in her tweet, “This attorney belongs behind bars, pending a lengthy jury of his peers” on the tweet.

Instead, Rush, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving family violence, was given a $40,000 bond and bonded out.

The judge also granted the former girlfriend an emergency protection order.

KTBC said that Rush’s law firm said he “no longer works at the firm.”

“We do not tolerate hatred or violence of any kind,” the firm said. “Our thoughts are with the victims who experienced a significant trauma that day.”
