Chicago police are investigating the shooting deaths of a 27-year-old woman and her 79-year-old father in a Far South Side home, while the woman’s toddler son was found unharmed.
Colleagues of Javonni Jenkins called her when she didn’t show up for her job as a medical assistant at Holy Cross Hospital Wednesday morning. Her 2-year-old son eventually answered the phone, they told WLS.
They had the boy on FaceTime for several hours, said Jenkins’ coworkers, who called police for a well-being check when they didn’t see her during the call.
“All we could see was from his face up, so the ceiling the majority of the time,” one colleague, who asked not to be identified, told the station.
“We came a little too late,” said Nicole Worth, another co-worker. “We saved the baby. That’s all we could do.”
Police found Jenkins and her father, Curtis Hardman, with fatal gunshot wounds.
The toddler was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital for observation.
Police said they don’t believe there is a threat to the general public and are interviewing potential witnesses.
