On Thursday, a Florida judge denied bond to a woman who is accused of murdering her boyfriend in April.
According to WPLG, Circuit Judge Laura Shearon Cruz rejected Courtney Clenney’s request to be freed on bond pending trial. Clenney is charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon for allegedly stabbing Christian Obumseli, 27, with a kitchen knife at their Miami apartment.
“There is no dispute that Defendant killed Victim in this case. The only factual issue in dispute is whether Defendant was acting in self-defense and whether this claim rendered the state’s evidence doubtful. Clearly, Defendant (Clenney) and Victim (Obumseli) had a sadly volatile relationship . . . However, from the evidence presented during this hearing, the Court does not find Defendant’s claim of self-defense on April 3, 2022, credible,” Cruz’s order reads.
The order also included a statement from a medical examiner who said it was not likely a thrown knife killed Obumseli.
Clenney was arrested in Hawaii in August, months after Obumseli’s stabbing death. Her attorneys have claimed that the boyfriend was the aggressor and she acted in self-defense. Her attorneys also said that Clenney often protected her boyfriend who, “as a Black man, could be hurt or harmed if he was ever arrested by the police,” according to reports.
In addition to the audio recordings, surveillance footage apparently also showed Clenney physically assaulting Obumseli in their apartment elevator months before the deadly incident.
According to WTVJ, the judge also agreed with prosecutors that Clenney is a flight risk. She is due back in court on February 6.
