A northeast Alabama man has been arrested and charged with killing his 62-year-old mother.
DeKalb County emergency officials responded to a home in Collinsville Tuesday night and found Sandra Jelks dead in her living room, WDEF reported.
Jelks was the mother of a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office employee, so Sheriff Nick Welden asked deputies in neighboring Cherokee County to handle the investigation.
Cherokee County investigators later picked up Bruce Lee Jones, 41, on unrelated charges; Jones is the brother of the DeKalb County employee and son of Jelks.
On Friday, Jones was charged with murder.
“It’s unfortunate that this horrible crime happened in the peaceful community of Collinsville.,” Welden said in a statement. “Our DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office family has suffered a tragic loss and we ask for your prayers for the family of Sandra Jelks and the employee who lost a mother.
“I would like to thank the offices of Sheriff Jeff Shaver and District Attorney Mike O’Dell for Investigating this horrendous murder. I would also like to thank the Collinsville Police Department, Fort Payne Police Department, Rainsville Police Department and the DeKalb County E.M.A. for their assistance in the investigation.”
Investigators released no further information, but jail records say Jones is being held on a $1.004 million bond for the murder charge along with possession of a controlled substance and several failure to appear charges.
