A suspect arrested for shooting a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, has reportedly been identified as a student.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, according to Newport News Public Schools, the suspect shot a teacher, who has been taken to an area hospital. Her condition is currently unknown, and it’s unclear why the shooting occurred.
“All of the students are safe,” the school system said. “The perpetrator is in police custody.”
Michelle Price, a spokeswoman with Newport News Public Schools, confirmed that a school employee was shot by one of the students, prompting a school lockdown at around 2 p.m. An hour later, a Newport News police spokesperson said the victim is an adult female, and only one shot was fired.
“The children are safe,” he added. “We do have the individual in custody. I have an adult female that suffered a gunshot wound at the hospital; I want to get an update on her as quick as I can.”
A school board member told 13NewsNow that the suspect was identified as a student, although police have not officially confirmed the information.
Investigators are now combining though information at the crime scene and processing evidence.
