A Kansas man has been charged with murder in a fatal fire that killed his girlfriend and two children.
Topeka firefighters pulled a child and an adult from the a burning house on Friday morning and later found another adult and child unresponsive inside the house, WIBW reported. The first two were rushed to the hospital, where the child was pronounced dead, while the adult and child found inside were pronounce dead on the scene.
Officials later identified the dead as Genny Fitzpatrick, 30; Peyton Tyler, 9; and Kourtney Tyler, 1. Fitzpatrick’s boyfriend, 32-year-old Kyle Tyler, survived the fire but was charged with three counts of murder, aggravated arson, and two counts of child endangerment after his release from the hospital. He was initially found on the back deck, police said.
Officials said Fitzpatrick and the children all died from smoke inhalation. The fire also damaged a nearby home.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said Tyler is being held on a $1 million bond and is set to be in court next week for scheduling.
