A registered sex offender in Virginia allegedly beat a 2-year-old girl in his care on Wednesday, leading to her death.
Harvion Simpkins, 35, was charged with second-degree murder following the victim’s death on Thursday. WAVY reported that Simpkins had been watching the victim and her infant sibling at the In Town Suites in Greenbrier while their mother worked.
At some point, Simpkins allegedly threatened to harm the children’s mother via text. The mother reportedly arrived at the hotel to find her toddler daughter beaten. The infant was unharmed, according to WAVY.
The news outlet reported that the mother found her daughter with a busted lip, bruises, and other injuries. Once at the hospital, it was uncovered that she also had a fractured skull and brain bleed, among other injuries.
According to the Virginia sex offender registry, Simpkins has a 2010 conviction for carnal knowledge of a child who was 13 to 15 years old.
In addition to second-degree murder, Simpkins is also charged with child abuse, endangerment, stabbing a victim, and making threats. He remains jailed without bond.
