A Texas woman has been charged with stabbing her fiance to death last month and trying to stitch up his wounds before she called 911.
Liliana Cervantes, 25, was arrested on Tuesday for the death of 32-year-old Nathan Freeman, KHOU reported. She reportedly told police that the couple had been drinking and arguing on the night of March 20 before she blacked out.
When she awoke, she said, she saw Freeman standing by the door covered in blood. He collapsed, and Cervantes got towels to clean up the blood because she didn’t want her 4-year-old son to see it. Then she ran for a needle and thread.
“During her statement, she talks about the fact that she finds him with a stab wound to the chest and starts sewing before calling the police and realizes there is too much blood and she is unable to actually sew the wound together,” Assistant District Attorney Anthony Osso said.
Cervantes reportedly told investigators she’d done it before when Freeman cut his arm a year ago and didn’t want to go to the hospital. Investigators say he did have a scar on his arm.
Cervantes also had a black eye when she was questioned on March 20 but denied there had been a physical altercation.
Investigators found two large, bloody knives in the apartment’s kitchen sink. The medical examiner said the fatal stab wound was to the chest and that Freeman had defensive wounds as well, including one to a hand that was so deep it broke a bone.
According to KTRK, he was stabbed three times. In court this week, the hearing officer read the complaint against Cervantes.
“The officer stated that she woke up with water being splashed on her and the baby, and she blacked out again,” the complaint said. “The next thing she remembers (is) trying to stitch the complainant up and calling 911.”
In addition to Cervantes’ 4-year-old son, the couple’s 6-month-old daughter was in the apartment.
Tessa Freeman, Nathan Freeman’s mother, said the couple was planning their wedding for the fall and that both had other children besides the baby, who is now in the custody of Cervantes’ family. Tessa Freeman said she plans to challenge that.
“Since she is being charged, I want my grandbaby,” she said. “That is the only thing I have from my son.”
Freeman added that she doesn’t “believe anything [Cervantes] says.”
“I think she was just making it up to try to cover her butt, so yeah, I got to get justice for my son,” she said.
Cervantes is being held on a $150,000 bond.
