On Tuesday, an FBI analyst testified that Lori Vallow Daybell’s brother’s phone placed him near where J.J. Vallow’s body was buried in 2019.
Nick Ballance said the device, which used a Gmail account linked to Alex Cox, was at a pond on Chad Daybell’s property and was in “close proximity to where J.J. Vallow was located” in June 2020.
Authorities believe Vallow was killed between September 22 and 23, 2019 — and Ballance said the device in question was on Chad’s property between 9:55 and 10:12 a.m. on September 23, 2019, according to East Idaho News.
Ballance also testified Chad had called Cox around the time Cox’s device was tracked to Daybell’s property in September 2019. He said that Chad also called Vallow Daybell three times and texted her numerous times in that span, East Idaho News reported.
Cox, who is Vallow Daybell’s brother, reportedly died of natural causes in December 2019. In July 2019, Cox allegedly shot and killed Vallow Daybell’s husband in Arizona. Vallow Daybell is also charged in connection with that crime.
Chad is Vallow Daybell’s fifth husband. They are both charged with killing J.J. Vallow, who is Vallow Daybell’s adopted 7-year-old son. They are also charged with killing Vallow Daybell’s daughter, Tylee Ryan, and Tammy Ryan, who was Daybell’s wife. All three victims were killed in Idaho in 2019.
The two children’s remains were found buried on Daybell’s property in June 2020. Prosecutors said Ryan — who was dismembered and burned — was located near a burn pit, while Vallow was in a plastic bag wrapped in plastic. His face, arms, wrists, and feet were wrapped with duct tape.
Vallow Daybell is currently standing trial for the three slayings. Chad will stand trial at a later date. Prosecutors have implicated Cox in his niece and nephew’s slayings.
Vallow Daybell said she was with Melanie Gibb, David Warwick, or her husband when her son and daughter died in her brother’s apartment in Rexburg, Idaho. Vallow Daybell allegedly said she was at her residence, also in Rexburg.
Vallow Daybell claimed she was in Hawaii when Tammy was killed at her husband’s home in Salem, Idaho. Vallow Daybell stated she was with two other people at the time.
Vallow Daybell — who is believed to have been involved in a so-called doomsday cult — allegedly told a friend that her children had become zombies and the only way to exorcise their bodies of evil spirits was to kill them.
Vallow Daybell — who is not facing the death penalty — underwent psychiatric treatment twice before she was deemed fit to stand trial in Idaho. Cameras are not allowed in the courtroom per a court order.
The trial continues.
