A Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly fractured the skull of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son with a mop handle because the boy urinated in his bed.
An arrest report says Shawn Stone, 32, was charged with aggravated child abuse after the girlfriend watched the incident unfold in a camera on her phone, WOFL reported.
Volusia County deputies said that the woman had gone to see a doctor with her daughter Tuesday morning and had a “gut feeling” something was wrong while she was away. She opened the camera app on her phone, and reportedly saw Stone standing over her son — who was in a fetal position on the bed — punching him over and over.
The boy got up from the bed, but Stone kicked him even as the child begged him to stop, the arrest affidavit says. Stone retrieved a mop and started hitting the child with it, and the camera application suddenly stopped working.
Stone admitted being angry when he realized the boy had urinated on the bed and said he slapped him in the mouth and grabbed a mop to “pop it” over his head, but he denied actually striking the boy with it.
Detectives said the child had several injuries, including a split lip with fresh blood, facial bruising, bruises to the eyes and top of his head, and a bruise on his left thing the shape of a mop handle.
Stone fled on an ATV, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, but was soon captured by deputies. He’s being held without bond.
