A Florida man going through a dumpster found a dead newborn in a bag, prompting Lakeland police to begin an investigation to find the parents.

Lakeland Police Chief Sammy Taylor Jr. told WTSP the baby was found in dumpster behind the Just Move fitness center and still had the umbilical cord attached. He said investigators believe the remains had been there for about 10 hours.

Detectives are awaiting results of an autopsy to determine how the infant died and whether charges or possible.

He pointed out that Florida still has a safe haven law and the baby, if not stillborn, could have been taken to an emergency room or ambulance station in the area.
