A New York mother is being investigated after her 6-year-old daughter died with bruising all over her body.
Police said Jalayah Eason’s mother called 911 at about 4 a.m. Friday, reporting her daughter’s injuries, WABC reported. Officers found the girl unconscious in her mother’s bedroom.
She was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators said she had trauma on her wrists and torso and was living in squalid conditions, with clothes and other items tossed around the apartment.
The New York Administration for Children’s Services removed an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl from the household. Those child appeared to have old injuries as well.
Sources told the New York Daily News that ACS had been called the home previously, while neighbors said the mother frequently yelled at the children — including Friday morning, just before the mother called 911.
“Last night there was terrible screaming,” recalled neighbor Dennis Rivera. “It was exactly 4 a.m. The little girl was screaming. I had to go outside. I knew something like this would happen.”
“I feel terrible that I didn’t call somebody about this. Now she’s dead.”
Police are questioning the mother, but no charges have been filed. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
