Lori Vallow Daybell Seeks New Trial After Conviction for Murdering Children, Tylee and JJ

Lawyers for Lori Vallow Daybell have filed papers seeking a new trial, alleging that jurors were confused and improperly relied on information outside the court proceedings, KTVB-TV reports.

Earlier this month, Vallow Daybell was convicted in Idaho of murdering two of her kids in addition to conspiring to murder the wife of her then-lover and current husband, Chad Daybell.

The two children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old JJ Vallow, went missing in September 2019. Chad’s former wife, Tammy Daybell, died in October 2019, shortly after the children disappeared, and Chad and Lori married just weeks afterward.

Vallow Daybell’s defense attorneys on Thursday requested a new trial, alleging that the jury received evidence outside of court, that the court misdirected the jury on a matter of law or erred in deciding a question of law, and that the verdict is contrary to law or evidence.

The motion references statements that one of the jurors gave to a news outlet following the verdict in which the juror alleged that the “instructions were confusing and that he knew of evidence not submitted to the jury,” according to FOX 13.

Vallow Daybell’s lawyers also contend that a clerical error in the indictment should lead to a new trial; the judge later ordered that the error be fixed.

Prosecutors will have an opportunity to respond to the motion.

Vallow Daybell is being held in the Madison County Jail. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 31 and she could be imprisoned for life.
