Officials said an altercation between two groups near a busy area of the beach in Hollywood, Florida, resulted in nine people being shot, including a 1-year-old child, on Monday night.
Police spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi said that at least one person of interest has been detained by the police, but they are actively searching for another suspect described as wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and camo shorts.
According to police, the incident took place close to Johnson Street and North Broadwalk, a busy pedestrian area decorated with palm trees that borders the ocean. The city’s beach camera live feeds show that the sound of gunfire caused many to rush along the crowded walkway and into the surrounding sand.
“Officers immediately responded,” Bettineschi said, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “They found the nine victims with gunshot wounds. They immediately rendered aid.”
Nine people had been shot when police arrived at the scene at about 6:45 p.m., according to Bettineschi.
Bettineschi revealed that five of the nine injured people are adults, ranging in age from 25 to 65. The ages of the other four injured people range from 1 to 17. Their names haven’t been made public yet.
The victims were rushed to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Regional Hospital. According to Bettineschi, all of the shooting victims are in stable condition except for one victim who was undergoing surgery as of Monday, CNN reports.
