New Jersey officials announced an arrest Tuesday in the shooting death of a Sayreville borough councilwoman outside her home in February.

Eunice Dwumfour, 30, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in her white Nissan SUV just before 7:30 p.m. on February 1, CrimeOnline reported at the time. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rashid Ali Bynum, 28, was arrested Tuesday morning in Chesapeake, Virginia, and charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, according to MyCentralJersey.com.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone did not provide a motive for the murder, but said Bynum knew Dwumfour from the Nigeria-based Champions Royal Assembly Church in Newark, where she served in a leadership role.

She also said that investigators began to focus on Bynum after his cellphone was found not far from the scene in Sayreville, and Dwumfour was one of the contacts on the phone.

“The murder has shaken the community and no arrest will bring back the late councilwoman,” Ciccone said.

Bynum is still in Virginia awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

Dwumfour was the first Black elected official in Sayreville, chosen last year for a three-year term on the council.
