An Indiana woman was charged on Thursday, months after her newborn son reportedly suffered frostbite so severe he had part of his right leg amputated.
In December, Brittney Dickens, 33, took the baby to the hospital with a host of issues, including frostbite to his right foot, malnutrition, dehydration, septic shock, and renal failure. He also had an infection that entered his bloodstream and required his right foot to be amputated below the knee, according to The Elkhart Truth.
The baby was reportedly covered in feces, dirt, and grime. Dickens claimed she did not know how her son got the frostbite. She allegedly also told police, “I don’t change diapers.”
The Elkhart Truth reported that the baby was born in September, and the pair were living in a shelter at the time of the incident.
Dickens is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury. Her son was placed in foster care in December.
