Investigators have identified six additional victims in the ongoing sexual assault probe involving Stephen Matthews, a Denver cardiologist accused of date rape.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Stephen Matthews, 35, was arrested outside a courtroom on Monday as he prepared for a preliminary hearing on the initial case of drugging and raping a woman he met on a dating app in March.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office dismissed the original complaint against Matthews and filed a new complaint alleging 16 felony counts involving 10 victims. Now, the attorney’s office said that more women alleged that they experienced memory loss after drinking alcohol with Matthews on various dates before he sexually assaulted them.
CBS Colorado reports that the DA said the office has now identified a total of 16 victims. Matthews is subsequently currently facing 34 felony counts.
Matthew’s lawyer, Douglas Cohen, says that Matthews is innocent.
“He’s alleged to do things. Many people are alleged to do things — I’ll leave it at that,” the attorney said.
An affidavit released last month provided detailed accounts of several cases, revealing strikingly similar narratives as recounted by the victims. All of the victims said they met Matthews through different dating applications.
