A Michigan police officer’s toddler found an unsecured, loaded handgun over the weekend and fired off a round, killing themselves with it.
A source told WXYZ that the gun was not the officer’s Dearborn Police Department-issued service weapon but provided no further information.
“This incident is a serious personal family matter, and we are respecting the privacy of the officer and his family during this difficult time,” Dearborn police said in a statement.
WJBK reported that the officer is a corporal with the department.
The 2 1/2-year-old child was rushed to a hospital at about 6 p.m. on Sunday but did not survive.
