Two Americans found dead in a Mexican hotel room near the Californian peninsula were identified on Thursday.
According to ABC News, the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s office identified the decedents as John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 28, of California. Officials said Heatheo and Lutz died from “intoxication by substance to be determined” 10 hours before their bodies were discovered at the Rancho Pescadero in El Pescadero, as CrimeOnline previously reported.
The hotel was described as a luxury property owned by Hyatt.
While officials have not ascertained a cause of death, earlier reports suggested that some sort of gas inhalation was a contributing factor. Rancho Pescadero General Manager Henar Gil told the Daily Beast that there was no evidence of violence.
“Abby and her boyfriend thought they had food poisoning and went to the hospital to get treatment. We were told they were feeling much better a few days later,” Lutz’s friend wrote on a GoFundMe page, per KTLA. “We received a phone call saying that they had passed away peacefully in their hotel room in their sleep. We have been told it was due to improper venting of the resort.”
According to the Daily Beast, the local attorney general said it could not comment further regarding the ongoing investigation due to privacy concerns.
