A family friend has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after she was caught on camera beating and slamming a toddler onto a sofa.
Kristla Holmes told WCBS that she was at work when she took a look at her surveillance camera and saw Chantal Mason cover her 2-year-old son with a blanket and repeatedly slap him on the back.
Later, Holmes said, Mason was “lounging on my couch” with her foot on her son’s head, still under the blanket.
Mason is a longtime family friend who’d watched the boy before, Holmes said, and she never suspected any problems until Monday afternoon, when her camera kept detecting motion in the living room.
“She told me that he just woke up, she fed him, and he was laying on the couch watching TV. So when I checked the camera, that’s not what he was doing. He was hysterically crying,” Holmes said.
Holmes said she rushed to her Newburgh home and called police, who arrested Mason. The boy had some minor bruising, she said.
“She deserves to be in jail. I want her in jail,” Holmes said.
Officials told The New York Post that the slapping went on for much longer than the short clip shown on television stations.
