Kentucky Woman Shoots Texas Uber Driver She Thought Was Taking Her to Mexico

A 48-year-old Kentucky woman was arrested Friday after she shot her Uber driver on a Texas highway.

Phoebe Copas allegedly told police she shot 52-year-old Daniel Piedra Garcia because she believed he was taking her to Mexico instead of her requested destination.

El Paso Police were called to the scene on U.S. 54 near Loop 375 shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday. Piedra was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition, KTSM reported.

Detectives said Copas called for an Uber from the west side of the city and asked to go to a location in the Lower Valley. At some point, she said, she thought Garcia was taking her to Mexico, so she shot him.

Police said their investigation does not support a kidnapping or even that Piedra veered from the route to Copas’ destination.

Copas was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and booked into jail on a $1 million bond, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing.
