The U.S. Coast Guard is currently searching in the Atlantic Ocean after a tourist ship en route to see the submerged wreckage of the Titanic disappeared Monday.
Fox News Digital reports that the U.S. Coast Guard is searching for the lost submersible, “Titan,” chartered by OceanGate Expeditions, The company offers tourists a way to explore the renowned Titanic shipwreck, located approximately 12,500 feet deep on the ocean floor off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
“Our entire focus is on the crew members in the submersible and their families,” the company said in a statement, according to The New York Times.
“We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible.”
World explorer Hamish Harding is one of the five people aboard the missing submarine, according to a Facebook post by his stepson, Brian Szasz.
Currently, it’s unknown when contact with the submarine was lost, but the USCG Northeast dispatched a C-130 aircraft for surface search, while the Rescue Coordination Center Halifax dispatched a P8-Orion aircraft with sonar buoys for the underwater search.
Additional aircraft from the US and Canada are en-route, according to Fox News Digital. The Titan is capable of supporting five people for 96 hours.
