The South Carolina judge who in March sentenced Alex Murdaugh to life in prison for murdering his wife and son said he feels sorry for the disbarred attorney.
Speaking with the “Today” show, Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman said he believes Alex Murdaugh is haunted by the slayings. Newman, who plans to retire this year, explained he gave the convicted double murderer a chance to speak in hopes that he would confess to his crimes before sentencing.
“I’m sure if he had an opportunity to do it over again, he’d never do it,” he told “Today.” “And I wasn’t trying to pull him out of that hole, but I wanted to give him an opportunity to say something.”
Alex Murdaugh has appealed the two life sentences he received for Maggie and Paul’s murders. Meanwhile, he still faces more than 100 counts for allegedly defrauding his former law firm and a slew of clients.
Though he admitted to some of these crimes during his high-profile trial, Alex Murdaugh pleaded not guilty to some of those charges in May.
Newman commented, “I felt that he was just in a position where […] if there’s a hole that he could go into, he would dive in that hole and keep going to the lowest depths.”
