Mexican Luxury Hotel Temporarily Closed After California Couple’s Deaths

Hyatt has temporarily closed a luxury hotel in Mexico for an independent investigation after the deaths of a California couple there.

Abby Lutz, 28, and John Heathco, 41, were found dead in their room at Rancho Pescadero in Baja California Sur last week, as CrimeOnline reported. Officials initially said they suspected gas inhalation as the cause of death, but prosecutors later said autopsies determined they died of “intoxication by undetermined substances.”

In a statement provided to KCBS, Hyatt its “top priority is the safety and wellbeing of guests and colleagues.”

“The property will not resume normal operations until our investigation is complete,” the company said.

A family friend wrote in a GoFundMe for Lutz’s funeral that the couple spent a night a few days before their deaths hospitalized because they thought they had food poisoning. The couple died in their sleep, and prosecutors said they’d been dead for nearly half a day when they were found.
