“Two of the individuals were celebrating a golden wedding anniversary this weekend. As you can imagine, this would be tragic on any day. To have family gathered for this kind of a celebration makes it particularly tragic,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a Sunday evening news conference. according to WBZ.
Ryan said investigators found signs of forced entry into the home. Police are also investigating an attempted break-in shortly before 6 a.m. about a half-mile from the victims’ home, she said, but it’s not clear if the two cases are related or which of the two incidents happened first, Boston.com reported.
Authorities cautioned residents to be vigilant and lock their doors.
“I am very concerned with such a violent crime taking place whereas this individual or individuals are still at large,” Newton Police Chief John Carmichael said at Sunday night’s news conference.
The DA’s office asked residents to check security camera footage from Saturday night into Sunday morning for anything suspicious.
“We really need the public’s help with respect to this incident,” Ryan said.
Carmichael added the investigators “won’t rest until we found out who did this and we find justice for the victims.”
