Michigan police released body camera footage this week from an Albion police officer who broke down a bathroom door and rescued a 2-year-old girl being held under water in the tub by her mother.
The video release came as court documents provided details about the incident, including Jessica Edward-Ricks’s 15-year-old daughter wrestling a knife away from her mother before calling 911 for help, WOOD reported.
As CrimeOnline reported, officers broke down the bathroom door to rescue the toddler from her mother and began CPR to get the girl breathing again.
The video, released by the Albion Department of Public Safety, shows an Albion officer and a Calhoun County deputy enter Edward-Ricks’s home, identify themselves, and knock on the locked bathroom door. When no one answered, the officers kicked in the door and found the 35-year-old mother hunched over the tub, holding the child under the running water.
“Get out! What’s going on?” the officer says.
The officer takes the 2-year-old girl, who had also been stabbed, away from the woman and into another room, where he starts chest compressions while calling for medical assistance.
“Wake up, baby,” he says. “Breathe for us, honey,” another officer says.
The toddler began crying after about a minute and the officers began first aid for stab wounds on her neck and chest. She was eventually taken to a hospital, along with a 4-year-old brother who was also stabbed. Both children and their mother are believed to have ingested cleaning fluid as well. The children were later flown to a hospital in Ann Arbor, where they were listed in stable condition.
Edwards-Ricks was arraigned on Tuesday, appearing in court via video link from her jail bunk. She has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse, and two counts of second-degree child abuse.
Teen fights mother for the knife
Court documents reveal the dramatic moments before police arrived at the home. The 15-year-old told investigators that her 2-year-old sister and 8-year-old brother ran into her room, with the toddler “covered in blood.” The older girl went into her mother’s room, where she found Edward-Ricks chasing her 4-year-old brother with a knife.
“(The 15-year-old) stated that (her brother) went under the bed, and that JESSICA was attempting to go after him,” the document said. “(The 15-year-old) stated that she fought JESSICA for the knife, and that during the struggle JESSICA attempted to stab her.”
The 8-year-old told detectives that he ran to his mother’s room when he heard screaming and saw her stab his younger siblings. He also said he saw his older sister fighting with their mother, calling for her to “Give me the knife.”
The teen said that her mother tried to stab herself and said she had to “fix” the 2-year-old. She said she fought her mother for the knife and “was able to get it from her,” but Edward-Ricks took the 2-year-old into the bathroom and locked the door. The older girl said she took the other two children to a neighbor’s and called for help.
The judge on Tuesday set Edward-Ricks’s bond at $500,000 and ordered her to undergo a mental health assessment. If she is released, she was barred from any contact with the two younger children and may not have unsupervised contact with the two older children.
She is due back in court on July 11.
