North Carolina officials recently released two 911 calls related to an incident earlier this month which reportedly involved a man punching a 1-year-old boy in the face.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a woman was pushing her baby in a stroller outside when Rico Williams — a stranger — walked up to them, mumbled something under his breath, and struck the boy with a closed fist. Williams fled on foot, but a Doordash employee who witnessed the ordeal apprehended Williams and held him down until police responded, according to WJZY.
At least two emergency calls were placed during the June 4 incident.
In one of the 911 calls, the dispatcher responds, “Are you kidding me?” upon being told what transpired. A male caller goes on to describe the assailant and explain that he is being detained. He told the dispatcher that the baby is crying and he does not think he needs medical attention.
“He ran across the crosswalk and uppercut a baby in the face,” he said.
In another 911 call, a dispatcher asked whether the baby requires medical attention, to which the caller also said no.
“The baby is just upset,” the caller stated.
Police said the boy was hospitalized with a swollen eye and an abrasion on his upper lip.
WJZY reported that Williams does not have prior convictions. However, he was previously charged with assault and trespassing.
In this case, Williams was charged with assault on a child under 12. He remains jailed on a $125,000 bond.
