A Louisiana girl allegedly murdered by her father’s live-in girlfriend died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, according to new information released this week about the case.
On Thursday, Bunnak “Hannah” Landon was in court in Jefferson Parish, where a court commissioner found that she was a danger to the community and a flight risk and should be held without bond ahead of trial, according to WWLTV.
Landon, 43, is facing a charge of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the April 25 death of 6-year-old Bella Fontenelle.
Authorities allege that Landon murdered Fontenelle, placed her body in a plastic bucket, and then dragged the bucket to the girl’s mother’s home less than two blocks away and dumped the remains in the yard.
A neighbor’s security camera recorded Landon transporting the bucket on the sidewalk in the dark night.
Fontenelle reportedly told a school counselor that she did not like being at her father’s home and that Landon would be mean to her and her 7-year-old sister, according to testimony Thursday from detective Anthony Buttone, WWLTV reports.
Dana Troxclair, Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office chief forensic pathologist, testified Thursday that the girl died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, but she is still working on her report about the death.
Landon’s DNA was reportedly found on the bucket. When she returned to her boyfriend’s house, she allegedly placed her phone in a plastic bag and then buried it. At some point, Landon allegedly used the phone to search for defense attorneys, according to the television station.
Around midnight on April 26, Landon went to the Harahan Police Department voluntarily, where she reportedly said she was having issues with her family and asked to make a phone call. She appeared to be wearing the same clothing from the time she was recorded on video earlier in the evening dragging the bucket.
“She looked distressed,” Harahan Police officer Logan Barlow testified on Thursday, according to WWLTV.
Landon allegedly did not want to discuss her family issues with police, who called for an ambulance hours later to seek a mental health evaluation.
Witnesses testified on Thursday that the family dynamics were tense. In 2019, the girls’ father was accused of threatening to kill the girls, their mother, and himself. He was also charged with battery in 2021 for allegedly harming the mother.
Authorities do not believe either of the biological parents had any role in Fontenelle’s death.
